Is it dangerous to eat while driving?

Most drivers know how dangerous it is to send a text message on the road or get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol. However, it is vital to point out that there are many other behaviors which can result in a motor vehicle collision, even if they do not seem very dangerous. For example, eating while driving can be risky for a number of reasons, whether a driver has to take his or her hands off the wheel to reach for food or they spill food or burn their mouth. Sadly, distracted driving accidents can be very devastating.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eating is one of the many reasons why drivers can become distracted on the road. By eating any type of food or drinking any beverage while behind the wheel, drivers endanger their own safety and the lives of others too. However, this behavior is very common, and many people eat or drink while they are on the road. The CDC reports that over 1,000 people are hurt in distracted driving crashes each day, and that roughly 9 lives are lost on a daily basis as a result of these wrecks.

Regrettably, drivers will continue to consume food and perform other distracting tasks (such as using a GPS) while behind the wheel. Inevitably, some of these drivers will cause a collision because they were not paying attention to the road or had their hands off of the wheel, and our law office strongly believes that the victims of these crashes deserve justice.
