Your license protection options when facing DWI charges

A driving license, for most people, is not simply a document. It enables them to live their lives as they wish — from getting to work so that they can earn an income, to picking up their kids from school, to taking road trips with their family. Therefore, when a person loses their driver’s license, they could also lose their ability to carry on with their life as usual.

If you have recently been pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you may be currently facing DWI charges, which will put you at risk of losing your license. To avoid losing your daily freedoms, you will need to take action against this. The following are some of the options that could be available to you.

Defend yourself against the charges

Perhaps the most obvious option you have is to attempt to defend yourself against the charges. This may be easy or difficult to do depending on the particular circumstances surrounding your arrest.

For example, if you took a Breathalyzer test that was measured to be just over the legal limit of 0.08%, you may have cause to believe that the test was faulty and successfully have charges dropped. However, if you were driving recklessly and were measured with a significantly high blood alcohol percentage (BAC) it may be more difficult to defend yourself.

Look into hardship licenses

If you are going to suffer significantly as a result of losing your license, you may be able to qualify for a hardship license. To do so, you will need to show that losing your license will lead you to suffer extreme hardship, for example, the loss of your job. You should also be able to show that there are no other reasonable transportation alternatives available to you.

If you are facing DWI charges in New York, make sure that you take action to understand the options available to you.
