Construction workers: Beware of injuries as a third party

Did you know that 20% of every 5,000 private-industry fatalities involve construction workers? That equates to one in five workers dying in the construction injury. Of course, there are also many nonfatal injuries that occur as well.

As a construction worker who has come to a site as a third party, it’s important that you understand the way the team is working now and the steps you need to stay safe. It’s not always easy to mesh with another group of people you’re contracted to work with, but all of you can stay safer by following the standards of the industry as well as by communicating about the risks of the particular job.

The top four causes of fatalities on the job are:

  • Electrocutions
  • Being caught between or in objects
  • Falls
  • Being struck by an object

These accidents cause thousands of injuries yearly as well. The statistics show that the self-employed and small companies with 10 or fewer employees account for around half of all deaths that occur on construction sites, which is something else to keep in mind.

As a third party, you may also realize that you are not employed by the party who has contracted you in. As such, if you are hurt on the job, you will not be entitled to workers’ compensation through that client. Instead, you may have to file a personal injury claim against the client or others who caused the incident that resulted in your injuries.

As a third-party worker, you deserve to be safe and to be able to work in a positive, safety focused environment. If you are injured, then you need to look into making a claim to cover your losses.
